Burnie is a thriving NW Tasmanian port city 323 km n-w of Hobart on Bass Hwy. European settlement of Emu Bay, its former name, began in 1820s bolstered by an important timber industry and tin mining. Today Burnie continues to prosper as a busy port and rural service centre with its paper & pulp mills and is characterized by its charming hillside timber houses overlooking the pretty bay. Burnie markets 1st & 3rd Sat. Burnie Shines (Oct). Emu Valley Rhododendron Gardens (6 km south) superb gardens of the city’s floral emblem. Open Aug-Feb. Fern Glade (5 km w) on Emu River with great bushwalks and picnic areas. Upper Natone Forest Reserve and Lake Kara (30 km s) scenic bushwalks & trout fishing.
