Burnie is a thriving NW Tasmanian port city 323 km n-w of Hobart on Bass Hwy. European settlement of Emu Bay, its former name, began in 1820s bolstered by an important timber industry and tin mining. Today Burnie continues to prosper as a busy port and rural service centre with its paper & pulp mills and is characterized by its charming hillside timber houses overlooking the pretty bay.
